Christmas time is my favorite time of the year for several reasons. One of them is all of the cookies and delicious treats there are to bake and share with others. Growing up my mom would always have cookie and dessert recipes set aside that she would only make for Christmas.
She would ask my sister and I which ones we wanted to help her with (we usually chose the easiest ones because it meant we would be done faster). Once she was done with baking all of them, there would be so many Tupperware containers scattered all over the house.
As long as I can remember she would always make trays for each of our closest neighbors, which was usually about 4 houses. She would load up each of the cookie trays, wrap them in foil, put a nice shiny bow on them and send us out to deliver cookies. Each one of our neighbors would get so excited because they would wait all year to get my mom's delicious cookies and they usually wouldn't last more than a year. They have lived in the same house for the past 28 years, and every year she still delivers cookies to the neighbors.
Puppy chow is one of my favorite things to make because it's so customizable! You can literally add whatever you want to the base recipe.
I kept mine simple and just added some red and green M&M's to make it festive.
You will want to start with a VERY LARGE microwave safe mixing bowl. I forgot how much volume there was and had to transfer bowls half way through.
Add 1/4 cup of butter, 1 cup of milk chocolate chips and 1/2 cup of peanut butter. Melt in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between each session. Microwave the butter, chocolate and peanut butter mixture until all of the chocolate chips are fully melted; mine took about 1 minute, 30 seconds.
In the same mixing bowl, measure out 9 cups of Chex cereal. You can really use any kind of Chex cereal for this: Rice, Corn, Wheat, Chocolate, Cinnamon, etc. I decided to use rice Chex because I'll eat the leftovers for breakfast cereal.
Once you add the 9 cups of cereal to the bowl you will want to stir until each piece of cereal is coated in the peanut butter chocolate mixture.
In a gallon sized Ziploc bag, add one cup of powdered sugar to the bottom. Add in the coated cereal and then add another cup of powdered sugar on top. I find that splitting up the powdered sugar makes it easier to coat all of the cereal pieces. Shake the gallon sized bag until all of the cereal pieces are coated.
Transfer the coated cereal to another bowl, where you can mix in the other ingredients you want. Marshmallows, roasted peanuts, and pretzels would be a great addition to this mix! I had some red and green M&M's so I just added those.
I recommend storing it in an air-tight container so the cereal keeps some crunch to it.
